In a company setting, nobody gets promoted for picking the “coolest” model. People get promoted for not creating a mess. The stuff that never goes viral. And once a big company standardizes, switching is slow. It’s not like swapping a note-taking app. It’s training, policy, templates, internal tools, budgets, and “this is how we do it here” habits.

That creates lock-in, even if nobody calls it that.

But I also don’t want to overread it. “Business adoption” depends on what you’re measuring. Is it total dollars spent, number of transactions, number of companies, or something else? Are we seeing direct usage, or usage through a third party that bundles these models? Does this track a certain kind of company more than others? None of that is obvious from a social post, and people love turning partial data into a full narrative.

Even if the measurement is solid, there’s another possibility: businesses could be “adopting” Anthropic for the official stuff, while teams quietly use OpenAI for the messy real work. That happens all the time. A company announces one approved tool, and then employees use whatever actually helps them hit their deadline. The official numbers look clean, and the real behavior stays invisible.

If that’s what’s going on, then the “leader” in adoption might just be the leader in procurement paperwork.

The consequences here are not small. If more businesses standardize on one model, that model becomes the default co-worker for writing emails, summarizing meetings, drafting sales messages, and shaping internal docs. Over time, that influences tone, choices, and even what gets considered “good work.” A cautious model could make companies more careful and consistent. It could also make them more timid and same-y. A bolder model could push creativity. It could also push chaos.

And there’s a power angle. If one vendor becomes the safe corporate standard, they get to set the rules of what “acceptable” AI looks like at work. That affects what gets blocked, what gets allowed, and what kinds of mistakes are tolerated. Employees don’t vote on that. They just wake up one day and it’s in the handbook.

On the other hand, if OpenAI is losing share in business, that doesn’t mean they’re losing overall. Consumer mindshare matters. Developers matter. Ecosystems matter. The company that “wins work” isn’t always the company that “wins the future.” Sometimes the safe product becomes the standard, and the exciting product becomes the platform everyone builds on in the background.
