Google is reportedly working on an AI agent called “Gemini Spark” inside the Gemini app. Not just a chatbot you ask questions, but something closer to an assistant that can do things for you. That’s the whole promise of “agents”: fewer tabs, fewer steps, less busywork. You say what you want, it handles the mess.
On paper, I want this. In real life, I don’t trust it yet.
Because the moment an AI stops being “a thing that answers” and becomes “a thing that acts,” the risk changes. If it gives you a wrong answer, you shrug and move on. If it sends the wrong email, books the wrong flight, cancels the right meeting, or shares the wrong file… now you’re not correcting information. You’re cleaning up consequences.
And Google isn’t building this in a vacuum. It’s building it inside an ecosystem where your email, calendar, docs, photos, and searches already live. That’s convenient. It’s also a lot of power in one place. The more “helpful” it becomes, the more permission it needs. The more permission it needs, the more you’re betting your life admin on one system behaving well.
Imagine you’re a manager and you tell Gemini Spark, “Set up 1:1s with my team next week and send an agenda.” That’s not hard. But what if it pulls the wrong “team” list because you have old contractors in your contacts? What if it sends the agenda to someone who shouldn’t see it? People will push back and say, “So what, you already trust apps to do things.” True. But the difference is that most apps are predictable. They do what you click. An agent is more like giving your click power to something that guesses what you meant. Guessing is fine for drafting a message. Guessing is not fine for moving money, sharing access, or sending final decisions.
And yes, you can add confirmation screens. You can add guardrails. You can limit it to “safe” actions. But then we should be honest about what we’re buying: not a magical helper, but a faster interface for stuff you still need to approve. That can still be valuable. It’s just not the dream people are selling.
There’s also the incentive problem no one loves talking about. Google makes money when you stay in Google’s world. An agent inside the Gemini app will naturally steer you toward Google’s services and preferred paths, even if it’s subtle. Maybe it’s not malicious. Maybe it’s just “convenient defaults.” But defaults shape behavior. If the agent becomes the front door to the internet, whoever controls that front door controls what gets seen, what gets suggested, and what gets ignored.
Now, the optimistic view is real too. A good agent could help people who are overloaded, not just “busy professionals,” but parents, students, and anyone juggling too much. It could help someone with limited tech skills do tasks they currently avoid. It could make planning, writing, and organizing less painful. If it’s done right, this is accessibility, not just productivity.
But “done right” is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
If Gemini Spark is going to act on your behalf, I think it needs to be annoyingly clear about what it’s doing and why. Not “Trust me.” Not vague summaries. Clear steps. Clear permissions. Easy undo. A simple way to see: what did it read, what did it change, who did it contact, what did it assume. If it can’t explain itself in plain words, it shouldn’t be allowed to act.
And there’s a social consequence that matters: once agents exist, workplaces will start expecting them. Today it’s “nice if you can do it.” Tomorrow it’s “why didn’t you just have your agent handle it?” That sounds small until you realize it shifts the baseline. People who don’t want to hand over their inbox to an AI will look slow. People who do will occasionally create messes that everyone else has to deal with. Speed becomes the reward, caution becomes the cost.
So yeah, I’m interested in Gemini Spark. I also think the first wave of agent features will create a lot of quiet damage: small errors, weird privacy leaks, accidental sends, calendar chaos, and the slow normalization of letting software make choices in places where we used to insist on human intent.
