With 100 million monthly active users in January 2023 alone, as reported by Reuters, the urgency to address the breach was paramount. Although the bug was swiftly patched, the Italian data regulator intervened, demanding OpenAI to cease operations involving Italian users’ data.
  2. In a recent incident, law professor Jonathan Turley experienced the unsettling consequences of AI-generated misinformation. As part of a research study, a California lawyer requested the AI chatbot ChatGPT to provide a list of legal scholars involved in sexual harassment cases. ChatGPT claimed that Turley had made inappropriate remarks and attempted to engage in inappropriate behavior with a student during a class trip to Alaska, citing a non-existent article from The Washington Post in March 2018 as its source. However, there had never been a class trip to Alaska, and Turley vehemently denied any accusations of harassment. Eugene Volokh, a law professor at the University of California, conducted the study that implicated Turley. Volokh’s study requested ChatGPT to provide examples of sexual harassment incidents involving professors in American law schools, along with relevant quotes from newspaper articles. Although five responses were received, three of them were determined to be false upon closer examination, as they referenced articles from non-existent sources like The Washington Post, the Miami Herald, and the Los Angeles Times.
  3. In February 2023, cybersecurity analyst Dominic Alvieri raised awareness about a fraudulent ChatGPT website. The deceptive website closely resembles the authentic ChatGPT site, making it difficult to distinguish the scams. Notably, the fraudulent site includes a “DOWNLOAD FOR WINDOWS” button, which is absent on the genuine ChatGPT platform. Clicking this button leads users to a download page for a file named “ChatGPTOpenAI.rar,” which is discovered to be a malicious software known as “RedLine Stealer.” Vigilance is crucial in identifying and avoiding such scams to protect against potential cyber threats.
  4. During a test conducted by the I-Team, ChatGPT produced a quote attributed to Michael Bloomberg, which was later revealed to be entirely fictional. This highlights the capability of ChatGPT to fabricate statements and falsely attribute them to real individuals. Furthermore, when asked to include commentary from Bloomberg’s critics, ChatGPT generated quotes from non-existent anonymous sources, criticizing Bloomberg for leveraging his wealth to influence public policy.
  5. In another case, a journalist received an email from a researcher referencing a Guardian article that the journalist was claimed to have written in the past. However, thorough investigation revealed that the article did not exist in the Guardian’s archives or any search results. It became evident that ChatGPT had fabricated the existence of this article. Adding to the concern, a student approached The Guardian’s archives team regarding another non-existent article, which was also sourced from ChatGPT. To address these challenges, The Guardian has taken proactive measures. They have formed a working group and engineering team to delve into generative AI technology, consider important aspects such as public policy and intellectual property, seek input from experts, and assess the performance of AI when applied to journalistic use. This demonstrates their cautious approach to responsibly navigate the realm of AI-generated content.
  6. The Pingliang Public Security Bureau’s Network Security Brigade in China recently uncovered a significant instance of using ChatGPT to create and spread false content. During a routine online patrol, the cybersecurity team discovered an article titled “Train Collides with Road Workers in Gansu This Morning, Resulting in 9 Deaths” on a Baidu account. Investigation revealed that the information was entirely fabricated. Further examination revealed 21 additional Baidu accounts involved in publishing the same false article, accumulating over 15,000 views. All implicated Baidu accounts belonged to a self-media company in Shenzhen. The company’s legal representative, Mr. Hong, is suspected of committing a serious crime. Following the collection of evidence from Mr. Hong’s residence, it was found that he used ChatGPT to modify collected news elements and illegally published them on his purchased Baijiahao account for profit. Mr. Hong’s dissemination of fabricated information online has raised suspicions of provocation and troublemaking, resulting in criminal charges being brought against him.

These cases emphasize the criticality of robust security measures and stringent privacy protocols in the digital landscape. It serves as a reminder for companies to prioritize user data protection and uphold trust and transparency.
