This is the part of the AI boom nobody wants to sit with: the future is being built in buildings you can bomb.

Not “hack.” Not “regulate.” Bomb.

Based on what’s been shared publicly, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps put out a threat aimed at OpenAI’s “Stargate” AI data center project in Abu Dhabi. The language being circulated is extreme — “complete and utter annihilation” — and the video reportedly included satellite imagery pointing to the facility’s exact location. The claim floating around is that this is tied to a roughly $30 billion build.

If that’s accurate, it’s not just another scary clip for the timeline. It’s a reminder that this entire AI race has quietly turned into hard infrastructure — big, expensive, physical targets that sit inside real geopolitics. And once something becomes a physical target, all the talk about “virtual” and “digital” stops mattering.

My read: this kind of threat is less about OpenAI specifically and more about signaling power. You threaten the symbol, not just the asset. The symbol here is obvious: American-built AI capacity, placed in the Gulf, packaged as the future of business and national ambition. If you want to say “we can reach what you value,” you don’t pick a random warehouse. You pick the shiny thing everyone points at.

But I also think the AI industry has been acting like it can keep rising above the mess. Like it can be “just technology” while it chases energy, land, chips, and government deals. That’s a comforting story for people who want to build fast and ask forgiveness later. It’s also a fantasy.

Because now imagine you’re running a company that depends on these data centers the way a bank depends on vaults. Your product isn’t just code. It’s uptime. It’s trust. It’s continuity. If credible actors start naming facilities and posting their coordinates, you don’t just “increase security.” You re-price the whole dream.

And it’s not only about an actual strike. Even if nothing happens, the threat itself can do damage. Insurance changes. Contractors get nervous. Timelines slip. Partners start asking for escape clauses. Employees quietly update their resumes. Governments start “helping,” and that help comes with strings. You end up with a project that’s half innovation and half fortress.

The people who lose first aren’t the executives. It’s everyone downstream who was promised stability.

Say you’re a hospital system that’s starting to rely on AI tools for admin work. You don’t care about the politics. You care that your scheduling system and patient notes don’t go dark. Or say you’re a small business that finally built a workflow around AI because it made you faster than larger rivals. If outages spike or access gets restricted because of security fears, you’re the one eating the cost. The big players can reroute. You can’t.

There’s also a more uncomfortable consequence: once AI infrastructure is treated like strategic infrastructure, it gets treated like strategic infrastructure. That means states get louder, not quieter. It means governments will demand control, oversight, and priority access. It means “public-private partnership” stops being a friendly phrase and starts being a leverage point.

Some people will argue this is exactly why placing major AI compute in Abu Dhabi makes sense. Stable investment, strong security, a government that can actually execute big projects. And honestly, I get that argument. If you’re building something massive, you choose places that can build massive things.

But that’s also why it becomes a target. It’s visible. It’s legible. It’s a trophy. And trophies attract people who want to smash them.

Another thing people won’t like hearing: the more concentrated these facilities are, the more fragile the system becomes. Centralization is efficient until it isn’t. It’s efficient until one facility becomes a single point of failure — not just for one company, but for whole stacks of services that depend on it.

The industry keeps selling AI as weightless magic. The reality is closer to power plants and ports. If you mess with them, the ripple spreads. If you can credibly threaten them, you can shape decisions without firing a shot.

I don’t know how real or immediate this specific threat is. Social media loves a dramatic caption. Videos get clipped. Context gets stripped. Sometimes “threat” is propaganda aimed at a domestic audience, not an operational plan. That uncertainty matters. But it doesn’t erase the bigger point: we’re building critical capacity in a world where some players communicate in intimidation, and where symbolism is part of strategy.

If you’re OpenAI or any company building these mega-centers, you now have a choice that isn’t just technical. Do you keep building bigger, more obvious monuments and hope deterrence holds, or do you start designing for a world where threats like this are normal — more distributed, more redundant, less dependent on any one site?

So here’s what I actually want to know: if AI is becoming critical infrastructure, who should be responsible for defending it — the companies building it, the governments hosting it, or the governments that benefit from it?
