This is either a sign we’re back to building real things again, or a sign we learned absolutely nothing.

Because “largest quarter ever for venture investment” sounds like confidence. It also sounds like heat. And heat is great if you’re the one selling. It’s not always great if you’re the one buying.

Based on what’s been shared publicly, a16z is saying Q1 2026 was the biggest quarter for venture investment on record. The story is pretty straightforward: big firms like a16z, Lightspeed, and Accel were active early in the year, and a lot of the pull came from artificial intelligence companies. It’s framed as a rebound in momentum compared to the recent past.

Here’s my take: a rebound can be healthy. A stampede is usually not.

When venture money floods back in, the first thing that changes isn’t “innovation.” It’s behavior. Founders start optimizing for fundraising again. Investors start fearing they’ll miss the next big thing. Hiring ramps up. Prices go up. The bar for a “yes” drops just enough that mediocre ideas can slip through if they wear the right costume.

AI is the costume right now. That doesn’t mean AI is fake. It means the label is doing a lot of work.

I don’t doubt there are AI companies that deserve huge checks. Some of them will turn out to be as important as the cloud era companies were. But when a single theme becomes the reason the whole market wakes up, you get sloppy thinking. Everything gets pitched as AI. Every deck starts to look the same. And the uncomfortable truth is: when money is rushing in, nobody is rewarded for being careful.

The incentives push the other way. If you’re a partner at a big fund, your worst career outcome isn’t “I lost money.” It’s “I missed the winner everyone else got into.” Missing looks like incompetence. Losing can be blamed on “the market.” So you get faster term sheets, bigger rounds, less patience for boring questions, and a lot more hope disguised as certainty.

That’s how bubbles are made. Not by idiots. By smart people competing with each other.

Imagine you’re a founder with a decent product and a clear customer. You could build slowly, keep burn low, and learn. Or you could raise a massive round because everyone is “leaning in” again, then scale a sales team before you truly know what you’re selling. One path is boring and survivable. The other path is exciting and fragile. When the market is celebrating record quarters, the fragile path suddenly looks like the responsible one—because “why wouldn’t you take the money?”

Now imagine you’re a seed investor who passes on a flashy AI startup because the product doesn’t work yet and the plan is vague. Three months later, it raises a huge round anyway and shows up on every social feed. Your discipline doesn’t look like discipline. It looks like you don’t get it. That social pressure is real, and it shapes decisions more than people admit.

The winners in a record quarter are obvious in the short term: founders who can sell a story, investors who already have capital and access, employees who land at the right company early enough. The losers show up later: customers who get half-built tools pushed onto them, workers who join companies that hired too fast, and smaller funds who have to pay inflated prices to compete.

There’s also a quieter loser: the kind of startup that isn’t AI, isn’t “hot,” and still matters. When the market’s attention narrows, whole categories get starved. If you’re building a dull but important tool for logistics, housing, education, or small business software, you might find yourself competing with the gravitational pull of AI hype for talent and capital. That’s not a moral failure. It’s how crowded rooms work.

To be fair, there is a bullish interpretation that I don’t want to dismiss. Maybe the market is simply repricing the future. Maybe AI really is that big, and the reason Q1 2026 looks historic is because we’re funding a platform shift that will touch every industry. In that world, being cautious isn’t wisdom. It’s denial. And the biggest risk is under-investing and letting the most important companies get built by the most aggressive players.

I get that. I just don’t trust that a record quarter automatically means we’re investing in the future in a clean, thoughtful way.

Because the same pattern repeats: when money loosens, discipline slips. When discipline slips, weak companies get oxygen. When weak companies get oxygen, they distort the job market, distort customer expectations, and burn trust. Then, when the cycle turns, everyone acts shocked that “suddenly” things are hard again.

What I genuinely don’t know is whether this surge is being driven by a small number of very large AI deals or a broad-based return to risk across the board. Those are two very different worlds. One could mean a concentrated bet on a few likely winners. The other could mean we’re back to spraying money and calling it conviction.

If Q1 2026 really is the biggest quarter ever, do we want investors to treat that as proof the system is working—or as a warning sign that we’re about to repeat the same expensive habits with a new label on the slide deck?
